about

This one's all Coco. She always talked about getting away from it all. She still does. Not sure where that place is for her today, but traditionally that place has been Santa Fe, New Mexico. Magical place. Very spiritual. Georgia O'Keefe. She made her escape there. I imagine Coco imagined the same. I always thought this song would never make the cut. I mean, it's seven minutes long. Drawn out. And to tell the story, you can't cut anything. But it came out so beautiful, probably because it was written for a beautiful woman, probably because we actually played this one live, maybe because that pedal steel is just so sad. John Baskerville (bass), Philip Sterk (drums), Dale Thomas (pedal steel), db (guitar, vocals).

lyrics

SANTA FE

Why does she cry
Herself to sleep at night
When she’s got it all goin’ on
And just can’t get it right

Why does she do
The way she always did
That infinite sadness
That she always hid

Was it somethin’ I said was it somethin’ I did
I didn’t mean to let you down
Could I hold you and then make it all better somehow
And the thing she needed the most I had to lie
And still she cries herself to sleep
And I think I know why
My God give her wings and let her fly

She could have money
But she chose me
She knows damn well true happiness ain’t for sale
The best things in life are free
She could have riches
Beyond compare
A condo in Cleveland or her own desert home
But she’d miss me there

She said so many things she did so many things too
But she did not mean any of them well maybe a few
And the thing I needed the most she had her pride
And still she cries herself to sleep
And I don’t pay no mind
My God what have I done this time

Mornin’ the sun rises
She opens her puffy eyes
Smiles at me tenderly and kisses me goodbye

Now she’s movin’ away
To Santa Fe
And the letter she left on the dresser just says it’s better this way

Was it somethin’ I said was it somethin’ I did
Oh I really need her now
To hold me and then to make it all better somehow
And the thing we needed the most was compromise
And I wonder if she cries herself to sleep at night
And is there a new man in her life

Now she’s movin’ away
To Santa Fe
And the letter she left on the dresser just says it’s better this way
