about

I wrote this one on one of my many morning walks from my house to quite possibly the best little coffee shop on Earth, Cup of Joe in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On the way, I'd pass by the Black Hawk Hotel. Feeling rather sorry for myself one day, I glanced in the window on my way by and saw the truly down and out. I put myself in their position to write this. It really helped that my lifelong buddy Shawn Anfinson had a room there at the time, and I got the inside view of the halls and rooms. And I have been known to get a cold beer from the Cypress Lounge (the hotel bar) every now and again. Yes, the college girls made me feel old. And that was then! The Greyhound bus made its Cedar Falls stop there. There was the wooden Indian, Black Hawk I presume, at the front door. If those walls could talk. The hotel has been remodeled, and the down 'n' outers had to move on. But I do have the song as a record of the life it lived. One of my favorite lines from this one too, "Hope is a lot like water, you never miss till it's gone." John Baskerville (bass and bad-ass fretless solo), Philip Sterk (drums, harmonica), Rick Oltman (guitar), db (vocals, guitars).

lyrics

BLACK HAWK HOTEL

There’s a wooden Indian at the front door
As somber as somber can be
I could learn a lot from him
Man I act so crazy

And the red velvet walls
And the smoke filled halls
And a lot of people searchin’ just like me
I’m in hell
In my room at the Black Hawk Hotel

I found a place to lay my hat
That I finally could afford
But I sleep with one eye open
And the noise comes from right next door

And the red velvet walls
And the smoke filled halls
And a lot of people lost just like me
I’m in hell
In my room at the Black Hawk Hotel

Now the old polish lady at the Cypress Lounge
Serves me my Bud ice cold
And the young girls from the college in town
Make me feel so old

There’s a Greyhound leavin’ in the mornin’
Dry eyed and dry mouth I’ll be on
Hope is a lot like water
You never miss it ‘til it’s gone

And the red velvet walls
And the smoke filled halls
And a lot of lonely souls just like me
I’m in hell
On the bus outside the Black Hawk Hotel

Hope is a lot like water
You never miss it ‘til it’s gone
