about
This song started with the lovely and talented Annie Knapp coming into Bob's Guitars, where I worked, and showing me the partial capo with another capo trick. I went home and, with the help of some candles that read say a little prayer for me, came up with the track. Her beautiful, talented (and spirited) mom, Wendy Knapp, brought it all home. We had a conversation with regard to her faith and she said she didn't want to be right, she wanted to "get right". Poignant words. The original lyric in the bridge was, "So many Christians want to be right", but my wise and musically gifted co-writer Jack Ritzman urged me to change it to, "So many people...", and he was right. I wrote it from the perspective of a homeless man watching people file out of church. It was originally much slower, but Nash revved it up a bit, and here we have a crowd favorite.
lyrics
ANNIE
Sunday mornin’ and I’m leavin’
Could you do a little somethin’ before I go
And it’s true I’m a heathen
I know
Annie say a little prayer for me
I’m tired and I’m hungry
Out here in the street
Annie say a little prayer for me
Monday afternoon and I’m almost gone
I don’t know how long a man with no home
Can hold on
I just don’t know
Annie say a little prayer for me
I’m drunk and I’m dirty
And I’m falling at your feet
Annie say a little prayer for me
When so many people want to be right
Annie just wants to get right
It’s Tuesday night now and God only knows
The reasons were all here for
Maybe it’s like Jesus told us
Give your blessings to the poor
Annie say a little prayer for me
